Ballydehob Traditional Music Festival was founded in 2007 to bring the finest of Irish traditional music, song and dance to Ballydehob. Though it is only a small rural village, the area around Ballydehob is steeped in traditional culture. Indeed, all visiting musicians to the festival comment on the warm, respectful audiences with a genuine knowledge and respect for Irish traditional music and culture which is found at the festival each year. The festival all-star concert in Ballydehob Community Hall is always a special, intimate concert. Along with the concert, traditional music sessions are found in nearly every public house in the village.
To help to keep Irish traditional music alive and well amongst the young people of the area, the festival organises workshops each year to further promote Irish traditional music in the Ballydehob area. The festival also provides a unique opportunity for the public to receive lessons in sean-nós dancing - an art form which is rarely practiced in West Cork, and sean-nós/traditional singing. Each year, the festival strives to bring a selection of Irish finest music teachers to the village to tutor at our festival workshops. Our music workshops give local musicians to chance to learn from some of Ireland's foremost musicians - all who have released CD's, toured the world and made numerous television appearances.
The festival is a community-organised festival run entirely on a voluntary basis. The organising committee consist of local musicians and music teachers - all who are passionate about the promotion of Irish traditional music in the village and the surrounding areas
